Summary

Deadly storms have ravaged Mina’s homeland for generations。 Floods sweep away entire villages, while bloody wars are waged over the few remaining resources。 Her people believe the Sea God, once their protector, now curses them with death and despair。 In an attempt to appease him, each year a beautiful maiden is thrown into the sea to serve as the Sea God’s bride, in the hopes that one day the “true bride” will be chosen and end the suffering。

Many believe that Shim Cheong, the most beautiful girl in the village—and the beloved of Mina’s older brother Joon—may be the legendary true bride。 But on the night Cheong is to be sacrificed, Joon follows Cheong out to sea, even knowing that to interfere is a death sentence。 To save her brother, Mina throws herself into the water in Cheong’s stead。

Swept away to the Spirit Realm, a magical city of lesser gods and mythical beasts, Mina seeks out the Sea God, only to find him caught in an enchanted sleep。 With the help of a mysterious young man named Shin—as well as a motley crew of demons, gods and spirits—Mina sets out to wake the Sea God and bring an end to the killer storms once and for all。

But she doesn’t have much time: A human cannot live long in the land of the spirits。 And there are those who would do anything to keep the Sea God from waking…

For anyone and everyone who loved Spirited Away and wants to read something that gives that vibe, I beg you read this book。Here is the problem with me, I don't actually read synopsis's (which is bad because I get some shocks a lot of the time) like I'll see a cover or whatever and decide if I'm feeling it or not and like I don't know what it was that made me pick this up today but like thank god cause the way 'You've Reached Sam' ruined me I thought it'd be so long until I next picked something For anyone and everyone who loved Spirited Away and wants to read something that gives that vibe, I beg you read this book。Here is the problem with me, I don't actually read synopsis's (which is bad because I get some shocks a lot of the time) like I'll see a cover or whatever and decide if I'm feeling it or not and like I don't know what it was that made me pick this up today but like thank god cause the way 'You've Reached Sam' ruined me I thought it'd be so long until I next picked something up right and yet this book came at the perfect time。 Like I adored Shin so much I'm in love with Namgi and I'm in more lover with Kirin (my favee) and I love Shiki and like Dai, Miki and Mask had me weeping (also like plot twistttt did not see that coming) and like I don't think there was a single character I hated with a passion (except for that ginger weasle who is like irrelevant but whatever he can take his ugly bugly snakey bottom and flush himself down the toilet) but like he's irrelevant so me hating him don't count。 。。。more

My love for this book slowly but steadily grew into 5 stars。 Lyrically written, engaging characters, beautiful story。 There were several moments I almost cried just from the build up of emotion。 Reading this book felt like I was in a fuzzy, dreamlike cloud of fantasy from beginning to end - and that's honestly the only way I can think of to describe it。 Such a great reading experience! I'm very glad I picked this book up。 It's one of my most anticipated reads this year and it didn't disappoint。 I have really been loving all the asian fantasy inspired books that have been coming out the last couple of years and this one is fantastic。 I love the themes of love and family this book explores and it gives me a glimpse into my our culture。 I also enjoyed Oh's other book XOXO, her writing style is straightforward and concise。 The story is paced well and feels just the right length。 I I'm very glad I picked this book up。 It's one of my most anticipated reads this year and it didn't disappoint。 I have really been loving all the asian fantasy inspired books that have been coming out the last couple of years and this one is fantastic。 I love the themes of love and family this book explores and it gives me a glimpse into my our culture。 I also enjoyed Oh's other book XOXO, her writing style is straightforward and concise。 The story is paced well and feels just the right length。 I was able to finish it in just a few sittings。 Highly recommend if you want a book inspired my Korean fairytale。 4 stars。 。。。more

Mina is a willing but unscheduled sacrifice to appease the Sea God's wrath。 From that beginning proceeds a lovely, poignant tale filled with spirits, gods, formerly sacrificed brides, monsters, friendship, magic and budding love。 There are some similarities to The Ghost Bride but this story is more hopeful and more fun。 Beautifully written, clever and with a heroine who is smart, unstoppable and blessed with a loving heart, this was a wonderful read。 I read it in one sitting。 Mina is a willing but unscheduled sacrifice to appease the Sea God's wrath。 From that beginning proceeds a lovely, poignant tale filled with spirits, gods, formerly sacrificed brides, monsters, friendship, magic and budding love。 There are some similarities to The Ghost Bride but this story is more hopeful and more fun。 Beautifully written, clever and with a heroine who is smart, unstoppable and blessed with a loving heart, this was a wonderful read。 I read it in one sitting。 。。。more

This book, THIS BOOK IS THAT BOOK I’VE BEEN SEARCHING FOR! The first chapter instantly hooked me, and the author successfully captured my full attention to the tale of Mina, Shin and his loyal companions as they scour through the spirit realm and save the world。 The author managed to capture the element of Korean myths and folktales, spun it around with such wonder without compromising it。 I love how the author describes everything in this novel; the scenery, atmosphere, characters, and what the This book, THIS BOOK IS THAT BOOK I’VE BEEN SEARCHING FOR! It deserves an award of its own。 Mina’s tale is beautifully spun on gold threads of the best material TO EVER EXIST。 Usually towards the end of the book, the plot will get kind of boring, but this book KEEPS U ON YOUR TIPPY TOES。 AAAAA IT’S SO GOOD! I still get goosebumps everytime I remember。The chemistry between Shin and Mina is AMAZING HOT HEARTWARMING AND NAIL BITINGLY GOOD!!! The relationship each character has with one another is explained thoroughly, and I LOVE THAT。IF YOU REACH THE END OF THIS REVIEW, IT’S A SIGN THAT SHOULD AND MUST READ THIS BOOK AAAAAAAA 。。。more

i enjoyed this book so much。 the settings and the vibes are swoonworthy and i feel like this would be one of the books that i would reread again!although there are some parts of the worldbuilding that feels very underdeveloped, but reading this was still a good one!

I was so so excited for this book。 And while a lot of it lived up to the hype, there were some parts that left my feeling meh。 First off, the descriptions were amazing! I wanted to draw so many things! My laegest let down was the pacing。 Everything happened way too fast and I guessed the main plot twist a mile away。 Still recommend it though!

5 starsthis was a truly beautiful, magical book。 axie oh only gets better with each book she writes, and i think the girl who fell beneath the sea has made me completely fall in love with her storytelling。 i also loved these characters a whole lot。 easily one of my favorites of 2022 and i can’t wait to see what axie writes next!“we will always love you, because you are ours。 you are our sea, and our storms and our sunlight breaking out over a new day。 you are our hope。 we’ve been waiting for you 5 starsthis was a truly beautiful, magical book。 axie oh only gets better with each book she writes, and i think the girl who fell beneath the sea has made me completely fall in love with her storytelling。 i also loved these characters a whole lot。 easily one of my favorites of 2022 and i can’t wait to see what axie writes next!“we will always love you, because you are ours。 you are our sea, and our storms and our sunlight breaking out over a new day。 you are our hope。 we’ve been waiting for you for such a long time。 come back to us。 please come back。” 。。。more

I don't know how to start this review。 I have no other words except it was perfect。 First of all this book was one off my anticipated release of the year so I was obviously excited to read it and it was better than I have imagined and expected ( I have not included the blurb。 Please look into it on goodreads )The story starts very suddenly。 Reader were thrown into it without any delay。 I was pleasently surprised about it。 The story telling aspects of the book was so good。 Main reason why story h I don't know how to start this review。 I have no other words except it was perfect。 First of all this book was one off my anticipated release of the year so I was obviously excited to read it and it was better than I have imagined and expected ( I have not included the blurb。 Please look into it on goodreads )The story starts very suddenly。 Reader were thrown into it without any delay。 I was pleasently surprised about it。 The story telling aspects of the book was so good。 Main reason why story has stolen my heart。 There is a lot going on the book。 Lot of action and adventure。 Lot of love both romantic and platonic。 All the themes of the book were well done。 I could sense the big plot twist and turn but it did not spoiled the love for the story at all。 Now for the characters。 Our main Girl Mina was so well written。 So fierce and so kind 。 Her for stories was so relatable。 Also her relationship with her grandmother was so wholesome。 It made me Little emotional。 Kirin and Namgi (did i think of namjoon and Yoongi when I saw this name? Yes I did) was also great。。。 Namgi, he was so adorable and wholesome 🥺🥺。。 all the other side characters were great。 I was very much interested in the death God 。 (I would love to see more of his character 🤭)。 and MY MAN SHIN 。。。 I DON'T HAVE WORDS 😭😭😭😭。。。。 He was so mature and so intimidating and so perfect,。 Hey i could talk about him forever。 When you read it you will understand more。 I am thinking the author for giving me new fictional character to cry over。 Now for the writing。。。 As I said before it was amazingly done。 I know i sound like a broken record but it was seriously amazing。 It was simple but mature and powerful。Axie oh transferred me into this world with her amazing writing and perfect world building。 It was truly an escape from the rear world and I never wanted to leave。 I would love to see more of this characters and this world。I highly recommend this to anyone, if you still haven't figured out that from my broken record review。 。。。more

Listened to this in two days while working a 1000 piece jigsaw puzzle and ignoring the rest of the world。 It was actually a very good story for tuning out the world being a fantasy set in the distant past of an Asian country。 Some of the mythology was a little familiar as I’ve read a few other fantasies based on various Asian mythologies, but the plot itself was entirely original to me and I really enjoyed it。 I also continue to enjoy Amie Oh’s versatility as an author。 I’ve been saving her Kpop Listened to this in two days while working a 1000 piece jigsaw puzzle and ignoring the rest of the world。 It was actually a very good story for tuning out the world being a fantasy set in the distant past of an Asian country。 Some of the mythology was a little familiar as I’ve read a few other fantasies based on various Asian mythologies, but the plot itself was entirely original to me and I really enjoyed it。 I also continue to enjoy Amie Oh’s versatility as an author。 I’ve been saving her Kpop romance for when I really want that sort of book again, trusting it to be good, and her two science fiction novels were both great as well。I listened to this and occasionally had trouble remembering character names。 Also occasionally I felt things were a little slow, but honestly that could be because I downed over 8 hours of audiobook in only a little over 24 hours, which is a little crazy and probably not how the story was meant to be consumed。 I’d guessed at the plot early on, but then somehow discarded my guess, and was lightly surprised in a good way about how it went。 I was happy for the summary of what happened with the cast of earth characters at the end, but wish we’d gotten the same for the other cast of characters-one final check in, perhaps。 But not really a complaint。 More just that I liked things enough to want the story to continue just a bit longer…yes, I know I also said I thought it slow in places。 Oh well。 。。。more

3。5romance was a bit rushed and underdeveloped but overall a fun ride that made me cry at the end。 also couldn’t the fl have like not been underage?? ik that the ml is like ancient but it was weird that she was only 16 :( (i am more forgiving when the romance is w an immortal, because the age gap is already so big)

Raises the question that a "sacrifice" is not negative when you choose the outcome because of your undying love for another person/community。 It's when your fate is foisted upon you by society that can lead to negative outcomes。 Sometimes it's all about recognizing that red string of fate and choosing to cut it or sacrificing memory for the benefit of others。 Raises the question that a "sacrifice" is not negative when you choose the outcome because of your undying love for another person/community。 It's when your fate is foisted upon you by society that can lead to negative outcomes。 Sometimes it's all about recognizing that red string of fate and choosing to cut it or sacrificing memory for the benefit of others。 。。。more

More like 4。5 This was a solid story。 I was surprised at how much I could relate to Mina, so much so that I'm pretty sure I teared up more than once。 The folklore elements and descriptions were interesting and lovely。 There was one plot twist I didn't see coming and that hit me hard too。 Happy to add this one to my Axie Oh collection。 More like 4。5 This was a solid story。 I was surprised at how much I could relate to Mina, so much so that I'm pretty sure I teared up more than once。 The folklore elements and descriptions were interesting and lovely。 There was one plot twist I didn't see coming and that hit me hard too。 Happy to add this one to my Axie Oh collection。 。。。more

I did not have to think twice about giving this a 5 star。 It checked all the right boxes for me and I am extremely delighted to have read this。 My heart was full to the brim of joy and warmth after finishing。The book is a retelling of folklore/myth of Asian culture, primarily related to the Red String of Fate。 Axie Oh has a simple yet decadent prose in the storytelling: the world is beautifully fleshed and colourfully described, the characters portrayed with individually unique personalities, an I did not have to think twice about giving this a 5 star。 It checked all the right boxes for me and I am extremely delighted to have read this。 My heart was full to the brim of joy and warmth after finishing。The book is a retelling of folklore/myth of Asian culture, primarily related to the Red String of Fate。 Axie Oh has a simple yet decadent prose in the storytelling: the world is beautifully fleshed and colourfully described, the characters portrayed with individually unique personalities, and the relationships so thoughtfully and carefully written。 Everything was so engaging and captivating, more than I can say for Six Crimson Cranes (of which I DNFed two reads ago)。 There were certain moments that were similar in both books and yet I couldn't help but compare them。 Mainly, it had to do with how the writing helped to ensure my attention to reading it and also that The Girl Who Fell did not drag on with unnecessary storytelling。 I loved that for this book。This fast-paced standalone was so good。 I loved all the characters, the myth, the setting, everything really。 If you like Spirited Away, this embodies the soul of the movie and was truly quite magical to read。 。。。more
